Birding hotspots of the Falklands, The Netherlands, Georgia, Australia,
Sri Lanka, Malaysia
Falkland Island's:
East Island: The East
Island is a good place to begin or end your trip on the islands. From Stanley,
the "capital" of the falklands there are many touroperators who can bring you to
either:
- Volunteer point: A good spot to shoot
King penquins from very close with a wide angled lens, other species includes
Gentoo penquins, skua's, Red backed hawks, Crested caracara's either at the
point or on the way up there.
- Seal bay: Contact Tony smith, a very
nice spot; species to be seen: Gentoo's, Rockhoppers, Oystercatchers, Sea
lions and probably a lot of other smaller birds as well. Make the most of your
time here!
- Gipsy cove: Close to Stanley, good
spot to relax. Take pictures of the Magellanic's or "Yackass" as the Islanders
like to call them. There are also some Rock Cormorants and Black crowned Night
herons here.
Pebble Island: A larger island, and
therefore a lot to be seen:
- North / Eastern part: A lot of Birds
of prey close to the lodge: Crested Caracara, Peregrine falcon, Turkey
Vultures, Red backed hawks and also a Sea Lion colony. A bit further but
worthwile: A Rockhopper colony, and even further than that: A Gentoo colony.
- Western part:
Far west: Rockhoppers
and Gentoo penquins, Crested Caracara's.
Closer western part: Peregrine
Falcons, Magellanic Penquins, Plovers, Ducks etc. And some Sea Lions at
Jenesta Point.
Saunders Island: Black browed
Albatross and the Neck
- The Neck is the most important part of
this island. It is the place to find Black browed Albatross, King cormorants,
Rockhoppers, Gentoos and King Penquins as well. Close to the settlement are
good spots for King cormorants, Red backed hawks, Peregrine falcons, Military
starlings and Falklands thrush.
Sea lion Island: A smaller and
therefore best island of the Falklands for wildlife
- Sea Elephants, Striated Caracara's,
Black crowned night herons, Silvery grebes, King penquins, Gentoos,
Rockhoppers, Killer whales etc. etc. etc. you name it. This is the island
where you only wan't to leave from if you run out of batteries, film or your
time is up. Anybody who doesn't go to Sea lion island hasn't been really to
the Falklands. My advise: Book as many days as you have left for this island,
and bring enough film, it is worth it.
